Marriott Breadsall Priory – Priory Course

What we say

An outstanding undulating – and mature – layout and though relatively short, it feels and plays longer and tougher than the scorecard suggests. With just a couple of par-5s, both under 500 yards, accuracy is essential as you’re faced with many tree-lined fairways and undulating greens. There’s a Marriott hotel on site plus the 18-hole Moorland course.

  • 1 out of 5 Poor winter golf experience - Priory course

    By Dylan - London

Played the Priory course early on a Sunday morning. The experience was wholly ungratifying. My main complaint is that it is set-up (and is) very short. This was exacerbated by the placement of temporary tees on almost every hole further up the fairway (some 50-80 yards further up than the grass tee boxes). I wasn't able to use driver once on the front nine. This was not advertised on the course's web-site; frankly, it's not good enough for £35 to run temporary tees on EVERY hole even in winter, particularly since many of the tees are on elevated positons and likely not prone to water-logging. The temporary tees are actually permanent structures which indicates that they are use throughout winter. They should tell you that on the web-site. -We threw the towel in after 10 holes. The back nine may have been nicer, but I was tired of hitting five irons off mats to avoid going through dog-legs. - quite a few blind shots (having to aim at a stake), which I'm not a fan of, generally because they reflect too little land for a hole. - the man in the green fees office was rather bullying when I responded to his remark "That was quick" with the points above (shortened). He completely refused to accept that the existence and placement of ‘temporary’ tees meant the advertised length of 6000 yards (which isn’t long, in any event) was misleading. .- Overall, a thoroughly disappointing 10 holes of golf rewarded by a rude reception on returning the trolley. I cannot fathom how this course is value for money at full green fees, unless you are happy paying £65 for some good views over the surrounds. It’s a complete rip-off, but, being attached to a hotel, corporates seems prepared to pay it and the club will probably continue to prosper (or get by, at least).

The priory is an outstanding course, the tees and greens were perfect and the 11th is definitely the perfect drivers tee.

Cant help feeling the bad weather over the last month or so did little to stop us playing on such a fantastic course. We played it a day after the course was closed due to the torrential rain. The sun was shining and the course looked good .Iwas ,however prepared for sodden fairways and perhaps the odd green to be on temps....... How wrong Iwas. Credit to all the staff .... ALL THE GREENS IN USE AND ALL LIKE LIGHTENING !!Would hate to try to use my putting skills on these greens during a month without the rain . There was the odd damp fairway but to be honest this was always going to be but the course has to be one of ,if not the best i have played.Fairways not too narrow that you need to take an iron off the tee just to be safe . The rough not too penal for the errant tee shot the fairways would put 20-30 extra yards on a drive in normal summer conditions .Some great looking holes that test golfers of all abilities.Undulating is the word that comes to mind but not difficult to walk round . Cant wait to go again....but would have to use the 241 s next time as the price of £45 is a little more than I would pay normally.Tha aside the place is lovely! next time we hope to play the moorland also can not wait.

Long time since I played the course but thought i,d review as no-one has yet. Obviously can't comment on current condition but layout is impressive with many holes still vivid in the memory. Par 4 11th is one of the best driving holes i've played as you tee off from the heavens over the entrance road to the complex!!! well worth a visit - moorland course not bad either.
