Theydon Bois Golf Club

What we say
The original course was designed in 1897 by James Braid, five times a winner of the Open. Apart from being a golfing legend Braid was a golf course designer of great distinction. His most notable achievements being the designs of the championship courses Gleneagles and Carnoustie.
The course is truly unique, with 9 of the fairways being narrowly sculptured out of the ancient forest, pleasantly contrasting with 9 wider and winding fairways. Subtly borrowed greens are guarded by strategically placed bunkers, all of which make this par 68 course a real challenge for all standards of player.
Since Braid's time, Theydon Bois Golf Course has undergone many changes in order to deliver the standards and facilities required by members of a modern golf club.
However, the essential character of the course has not changed and the joy of playing golf in a traditional English forest in the rolling countryside of Essex prevails.

Short but very tight forest course with several holes bounded by OOB (10 yards behind a couple of greens). Best options are long irons/woods off the tee. Tree-lined fairways can also be a problem for badly positioned approach shots. A some fairways have ornamental hedges running across them. Greens quite tough & have plenty of breaks. Tees & bunkers could do with some work. Clubhouse was friendly if a little old fashioned (no mobiles, shirts/ties after 6 etc). Reasonable course but I wouldn't want to play it every week.
