Benton Hall Golf & Country Club – Championship Course

What we say
The course is challenging, but fair, and the greens are always in excellent condition. It’s also aesthetically pleasing, so it looks as well as it plays. I enjoy the dog-leg par-5 1st. There’s tree trouble down the right and the hole leads to a well guarded green.
Benton Hall Golf & Country Club is a challenging 18-hole parkland championship golf course set among natural woodland and rolling countryside. Renowned for its impressive views, each hole represents its own challenge with the River Blackwater meandering through the golf course adding to the picture postcard views.
After your round, relax in the clubhouse or on the terrace overlooking the lake with its abundance of wildlife. The venue benefited in 2006 from a major £5m investment. Facilities include 4000sq ft gym, aerobic studios, swimming pool, sauna, steam room, spa and crèche.
Accommodation: Sister venue The Essex G&CC has accommodation available and is only a 20 minute drive away.

Yes, my home club, but an honest and fair review. Excellent modern clubhouse and facilities from a 2006 revamp. Shame no covered driving range. Lots of water and ditches mean wayward shots are punished hard and can be very disheartening for us beginners! Can get boggy in wet weather but course is kept very well considering. Par 4 14th hole is my favourite challenge as i'm yet to par it!.. Good tee shot required over water to get to the bend with a clear 2nd shot onto an uphill green with 2 tiers and a wicked slope!

Despite a soggy Essex winter day, all greens were in operaton and only a couple of winter mats in evidence. Some of the best greens in this part of the world, and some fantastic holes, especially on he back nine since they have swopped some holes around. Excellent use of the land they have means some great hole layouts including a few over water. Shame they can't realy bring into play the big lake they have. Practice facilties not great, atmosphere OK (its not a golfers clubhouse as befits a former Clubhaus coure), but just for the course,I will be back a couple of times a year and especially to see what it plays like in summer.

A nicely laid out course with some challenging holes ( The 14th in particular which needs a long accurate drive over water , then uphill to a sloping green ). Pity about the practice areas, only two nets available before we played(there was 8 of us waiting to warm up). Overall i would go back but this time in the summer.
