Cambridge National Golf Club

The Cambridge National Golf Club (sometimes referred to as the Cambride Meridian Golf Club) was designed by Peter Alliss and Clive Clarke who have transformed this intriguing piece of land into one of the most challenging new golf courses in the county - a mixture of classic links terrain and modern championship course, for the advanced golfers amongst you it provides a great challenge, yet is still playable for all concerned!

Measuring more than 6,700 yards from the members' tees, Cambridge National Golf Club is both spectacular and inviting, offering a golfing layout to challenge the aspirations of the champion while being while being pleasantly playable for all.

  I played the course today, Saturday 9th October and was signed in buy a member- reduced-green fee £22. I'd say that's about the right amount to be paying if nobody is signing you in. As a members guest it's too steep for what's on offer in my opinion. The course layout is very good and the holes offer plenty of variety. The par 3's cover a variety of yardages and the par 5's reward big hitting but can still be neogtiated by the shorter hitters. All the par 4's are a good sensible challenge too, all except double cross! This is a par 4 with a dog leg of about 120 degrees where you have to cross a ditch at the elbow of the dog leg twice (daft local rule) so you effectively end up hitting back on yourself. The shot at the green off the tee is on, but local rules don't allow it. For me a golf hole should be made testing by what's in front of the golfer not what's written in the local rules section of the scorecard. This isn't sour grapes incidentally, I followed the rules and made par.  Anyway enough of double cross. The general condition of the course was good, no real complaints given the time of year. The only downisde was that the greens had been hollow-cored making putting a lottery, I won't complain about that, it has to be done. Whilst talking about the greens-there big and undulating. I'd make them slightly smaller and improve the quality of the fringes but that's probably just me. The thing that surprised me the most however was the number of tiny saplings that can't have grown since 1994 when the course opened. They may of course been added recently? To summarise, a good course if not outstanding (17 good holes anyway), a friendly welcome and decent facillities . It seems a younger course than it is and for me it's a tad overpriced, worth a visit with a member or a 2 for 1 voucher.

  I had a wonderful round on this course. The variety of the holes, and the complexity of some pin positions (for a pretty rubbishy player mind!) were excellent. The layout was nice, and the surroundings were lovely. I would rush back to this venue again and again!

  Played this course many times on a 2-fore-1 and and we have always been made to feel extremely welcome. All of the holes have different characteristics, with the wind often changing the state of play on each. Plenty of bunkers, more than enough water, all round a good solid challenge. This course has a very good reputation amongst local golfers and though still young, has the distinct possibillity of becoming one of the best 'all round' courses in the area.
