The Bedford Golf Club

The Bedford Golf Club’s first three holes don’t really set you up for the rest of the round: hedges, trees and OB are much in play. But after the 3rd you walk into a golfing savannah – the architect has made full use of the flat landscape with eight lakes, big doglegs and sloping greens. Even in late October the golf course was in top condition thanks to the fact that it’s based on sandy soil.

A great winter course – the greens are good all year round and have some serious undulations.

The Bedford Golf Club has come on leaps and bounds since opening seven years ago. The American-style layout was designed by David Pottidge who was clearly determined to bring a touch of Florida to rural Bedfordshire so there's plenty of water and sand to negotiate while the big rolling greens are a joy to putt on.

  Despite boasting on their website that this course is "inspired by Augusta" any parallels were lost on me. Their website uses some carefully chosen photos to make the course look mature and interesting. In fact for the most part it felt like open fields. The greens are the saving grace, as they are big and a good pace. We turned up intending to play 36 and went elsewhere at lunch time as we were bored. I wouldn't recommend playing golf there, although the ham egg an chips was lovely.

  The greens are big, undulating (so fun) and in great nick and drain well so a good place to go in a wet spell. However as can be seen in the photo the course is very open and sparse and needs to mature. It is also fairy short  - i did not need anything over a 9 iron to reach all but one of the first 14 in regulation  and on many hit 5w off the tee. (although we were off the yellows) The last 4 holes are a bit of a dissapointment with a long walk to the 15th, two long par threes and  a nothing hole to finish. So would I go back , yes cos its fun but needs to mature and will never be a great course without a redesign, sorry.

  Played this course for the first time 18/03/10. Super course all round. Good tee's, fairway's and green's, well maintained. Great welcome in both the golf shop and bar. Can't wait to go again. If it was nearer to my home, I would use this as my home course.  Great layout as the course meanders through a housing complex. Course looks open and easy, but the bunkers and water  including a few ditches catch you out, but the main problem to be aware of is the sloping fairways and greens. Looks safe but can easily roll away to danger. Don't take my word for it --- give it a try. Chad 19/03/10
