– PennardSwansea, West Glamorgan. Green fees: £50 weekdays, £60 weekends. Tel: 01792 233131. A significant rise up the rankings for Pennard’s ‘links in the sky’. This hybrid of linksy turf on clifftop terrain is marvellous fun with very few weak holes and several outstanding ones – such as the 7th and 16th. Never boring. |
– AshburnhamBurry Port, Carmarthenshire. Green fees: £39 weekdays/Sunday, £49 Saturday. Tel: 01554 832269. We consulted widely on where to place Ashburnham, and some panellists would have had it even higher – which may be a surprise given its low profile. But a modest start and finish apart, this is a stellar links. |
– TenbyTenby, Pembrokeshire. Green fees: £36. Tel: 01834 842978. Tenby is a bit like a links in the south-west of England. Laid out on the edge of a seaside town popular with tourists, a round on this fast-running links feels like a step back into a more simple era – something we absolutely lap up. Some terrific, quirky holes too. |
– ConwyMorfa, Conwy. Green fees: £36 weekdays, £46 weekends. Tel: 01492 592423. A consistently fine links which tails off slightly at the end with a couple of holes more parkland in nature. Otherwise a stringent test loved by the European Seniors Tour’s players. |
– SoutherndownBridgend, Mid Glamorgan. Green fees: From £50 weekdays, from £70 weekends. Tel: 01656 880476. The 1st is an absolute beast – played uphill with gorse and bracken lining the fairway. But this downland course is then very pleasant, with delightful links-like turf kept short by sheep. |
