It takes a bit of getting to but, like Royal Dornoch, the effort is wonderfully worthwhile. The Machrie has a fabulous little hotel full of character and lodges to house intrepid golfers. Little has changed since Willie Campbell designed it in 1891, so expect blind shots, tiny greens and rumpled fairways. Leave the driver in your on-site lodge and get creative around this pure links.
