Top 10 Golf Courses – Suffolk
This top 10 was chosen by 2017 County champion: Gregor Tait (Ipswich GC). Handicap: +3
Aldeburgh
Comfortably the best course in the county for me, a true test of golf with long and challenging par 4s complemented with brilliant par 3s. Aldeburgh is invariably in excellent condition, with smooth greens that can nd real pace when they firm up in summer.

Ipswich
When in prime condition this course is an absolute gem to play, and the excellent greens in the summer months are a proper test for any golfer. The recent bunker renovation will only improve the course when nished.

Woodbridge
Equally as good as Ipswich with arguably even better greens. It’s not a long course and a good wedge game will bring birdies but tee shot placement is essential. An excellent heathland/ woodland mix delivers a great-looking course that is always fun and challenging to take on.
Green fees: £55 midweek, £65 weekends.Tel: 01394 382038.

Felixstowe Ferry
The back six holes are some of the best links holes around with undulating fairways and tough run-offs around the greens. The wind will always play a factor and the course plays so many different ways, but the layout makes for especially tough scoring on a day where the wind comes straight off the sea.
Green fees: £50 midweek, £60 weekends. Tel: 01394 286834.

Thorpeness
A nice course with some excellent holes; the 7-9 hole stretch includes three of the best holes in Suffolk. The views of the House in the Clouds are superb down the nishing hole. It’s always in good condition and tough enough to cause good golfers problems.
Green fees: £60. Tel: 01728 452176.

Stowmarket
A well laid-out course with some great holes. The 3rd boasts one of the longest par 3s in the country and is a very tough hole. The greens can be slick and roll very well in the summer. Green fees: £40 midweek, £50 weekends.

Bury St Edmunds
A good course layout and some tough holes makes Bury a good test. The rst few holes are relatively gentle and allow for a fast start and accurate driving will bring opportunities. I’ve been -6 through nine before the course bites back!
Green fees: £40 midweek, £50 weekends. Tel: 01284 755979.

Rookery Park
A good course with small fast greens, and there are some tough holes which require you to shape the ball from the tee. The course is always rm during summer and holding the greens requires accurate iron play.
Green fees: £20-£40. Tel: 01502 509190.

Haverhill
This course’s rating comes purely from its greens: during the summer they are some of the best surfaces around, regularly running above 11.5 on the stimpmeter. Elsewhere, this is both fun and a true test.
Green fees: £34 midweek, £45 weekends. Tel: 01440 761951.

Seckford
This short quirky course with an impressive cluster of par 3s offers a good fun game though the combination of small greens and bouncy fairways keeps low scoring pretty tough.
Green fees: £23 midweek, £30 weekends. Tel: 01394 388000.
