Top 10 Golf Courses – Sussex
This top 10 was chosen by County champion: David Wicks (Sedlescombe).Handicap: +3
Nevill
A demanding course off the tee and though not overly long, you can’t always pull the driver out of the bag. A real test for all golfers, and a great matchplay course. My amateur win came here!
Green fees: From £30 weekday, £35 weekends. Tel: 01892 525818.

Willingdon
Great course to play all year-round and the ultra-demanding and beautiful par 3s make this course a pleasure to play. The members are very friendly too.
Green fees: From £25 weekday, £30 weekends. Tel: 01323 410981.

East Sussex National (East)
It’s very open off the tee, likewise into the vast sloping greens. A real test of long irons and putting playing at its longest yardage of over 7,200 yards; if the wind gets up this can be brutal with the lightning fast greens.
Green fees: £40 weekday, £50 weekends. Tel: 01825 880088.

Rye
A truly great links course. The wind is the course’s main defence, and playing at a hefty yardage off the back tees this can cause serious troubles. The greens are always fast and true. I enjoyed two victories here as a junior.
Green fees: £140. Tel: 01797 225241.

Worthing (Lower)
An amazing downland course with awesome views of the coast. The greens are the quickest I’ve played on when rolling at tournament pace. The long rough and high winds make it a tough, but fair test for all.
Green fees: £50 weekday, £60 weekends.Tel: 01903 260801.

Seaford
Maybe one of the toughest courses in the county. Tight fairways and quick greens are an important factor if you’re to master this demanding Blatchington layout.
Green fees: From £28 midweek, £35 weekends. Tel: 01323 892442.

Royal Ashdown Forest (Old)
I’ve had mixed fortunes here in the past but even so it’s an amazing heathland course with no bunkers, which will appeal to many golfers. Greens always roll great and the condition is always top drawer.
Green fees: £75 weekday, £95 weekends. Tel: 01342 822018.

Cooden Beach
This course is right on my doorstep and a great test of golf year-round. High winds off the Bexhill coast can make the course play a lot longer and with ve par 5s this was always going to be in my top 10!
Green fees: £50. Tel: 01424 842040.
