What we say
The first nine of Costa del Sol's first municipal, La Canada Club de Golf, was designed by Robert Trent Jones Snr and opened in 1982; Dave Thomas added a second nine 19 years later. This is an enjoyable, contoured golf course with great greens and a golfy feel – nearby Guadiaro has, for its size, the highest proportion of amateurs in Spain.

Let's be clear, if you want a luxury big name course then head up or down the road to La Manga or Valderrama. If however you want a real golf course, fast running with difficult greens and some great use of terrain you really should head here. It prides itself on providing more Spanish amateur champions than any other course and its easy to see why, get your tee shot in the wrong spot, bogey, try the heroic, double bogey easily made. The old and new nines blend easily and you'd be pushed to identify one from t'other. The drive off the first is spectacular, a 200 yard carry over a pond but visually that’s nothing compared to the eighteenth where you drive over a ravine. In between some lovely holes requiring a thoughtful approach if you are to score well. At only €41 in January this is a municipal and close to Sotogrande which is has many similarities with but at a fraction of the cost. Typically Spanish in ambience this really was a highlight, can't recommend it enough and can't wait to go back
