Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links (Championship)

What we say
Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links may be relatively new, but it boasts one of the best, traditional golf links in Ireland.
To the connoisseur, its full name – Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links – might be a turn-off; outside of Turnberry, where are there elite links attached to hotels?
But to take that attitude would be to inaccurately judge this book by its cover. Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links might be relatively new, and it might be overlooked by a luxury hotel, but this is a proper, traditional links.

Indeed, the club have tended to let the fairways turn brown here, so it can get very fast-running in the summer.
This 1990s Bernhard Langer design, in association with European Golf Design, has some fairly straightforward, flat holes, but there are more that cut between enormous dunes. Don’t be surprised if, with astute reinvestment, you start to hear a lot more about this venue.
The first nine holes deliver less drama as they are set on relatively flat land, while the back nine give a truer links feel, played around dunes.

There are some challenging and enjoyable holes, such as the excellent 17th and 18th and it does a fine job of providing a true, traditional links.
It could not be more convenient for the airport and has a hotel of uncommon potential, in what was once the home of the Jameson whiskey family.

A wonderful links course, a true test without the almost inevitable wind and rain. The pro-shop welcome is as friendly as any I have experienced and with a great hotel and restaurant on site a day or two to this part of Ireland is a special treat. Like all good links courses, the bunkers are brutal but the greens hold and run true. The practice facilities are somewhat limited but apart from this there is little I'd change.
