Vilamoura – Laguna
Published:
What we say
Laguna Golf Course makes full use of the marshland close to the sea and the challenge of the Laguna is distinctly different to the other Vilamoura golf courses. On the bright side, the fairways are spacious so you can regularly let rip with the ‘big dog.’ On the other hand, there’s loads of water (and strategically-placed bunkers) around to catch any wayward shots so it can be a bit on the intimidating side. But, thankfully, it’s not too long. However, best to take out plenty of balls with you…just in case!
Laid out over low-lying coastal terrain, this course, with its many water hazards and few trees, is considerably different from the other ones at the resort and many of its holes convey a links atmosphere.
U.S. golf architect Joseph Lee designed this course which was opened in 1990 and many previous visitors will recognise it as part of the former 27-hole Vilamoura III course. It has been subject to continual improvements over the years.
Measuring 6,111 metres from the white tees, the par-72 course includes several lakes which influence play on a total of 11 holes. In addition to acting as hazards and emergency water reservoirs, these lakes serve a useful purpose in attracting a variety of aquatic birds, both resident and migratory, as well as amphibians, otters, terrapins etc.
Vilamoura's master developers, Lusotur, have also established an environmental nature park not far from the course.
Apart from the lakes and an impressive total of 79 bunkers, another hazard is the wind that frequently blows over this somewhat exposed location.
Laguna shares a large, welcoming clubhouse with the neighbouring Millennium Course.

Perfect Holiday golf or Matchplay golf In very good condition, alot of water around but doesn't really come into play that much, you always have a bail out area. Good course but not very challenging.
-
this was the first course we played having arrive that morning-excellent opening course for a golf holiday. The water does come into play on a number of holes and will swallow a fair few golf balls if you are wayward.

I wasn't expecting a great deal having been very disappointed by Laguna's sister course Millenium two years early. I was pleasantly surprised by both the good condition of the course and the challenging but playable layout. There is water everywhere and you have a risk/reward decision to make on most holes making this a great venue for matchplay golf.

Great course - very difficult for high handicappers though
